Engineer Joseph E. Giammarino founded the Aurora Plastics Corporation in March, 1950 and in 1952 they started to manufacture their own line of plastic model kits.
In 1971 the company was sold to Nabisco who turned around and sold the model kit division to long time rivals monogram.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, toy and hobby company Playing Mantis created a division called Polar Lights (as a reference to "aurora") which reissued many of Aurora’s most popular monster figure kits.
In 2007, the Aurora Plastics Corporation announced their return as a manufacturer of hobby kits. some of their first kits included popular aircraft and figure kits from their original 1960s line.
